At the same time, these two are confusing since there are no English equivalents. Both of them mean the same thing but actually they cannot be used interchangeably in every situation. Let\u2019s take a look at what is the main difference between them!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h6><strong>Topic Marker vs Subject Marker<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><strong>Wa<\/strong> is best translated to emphasize on the <strong>predicate<\/strong>, while <strong>ga<\/strong> is to emphasize on the <strong>subject <\/strong>of the sentence. Examples:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When someone asks you, \u201cWho are you?\u201d, the appropriate answer will be:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u79c1<strong>\u306f<\/strong>\u7531\u7d00\u3067\u3059\u3002<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Watashi <strong>wa<\/strong> yuki desu.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I am Yuki.<\/p>\n<p>Explanation: in this sentence, <strong>wa<\/strong> is used to deliver a fact that <em>my name is Yuki<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Who is Yuki?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u79c1<strong>\u304c<\/strong>\u7531\u7d00\u3067\u3059\u3002<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Watashi <strong>ga<\/strong> yuki desu.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I am (the one who is) Yuki.<\/p>\n<p>Explanation: in this case, <strong>ga<\/strong> emphasis on who is the subject. For a better understanding, you can imagine that someone is asking <em>which one is Yuki in the crowd. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at another one:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What did Yuki eat?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u7531\u7d00<strong>\u306f<\/strong>\u30c1\u30ad\u30f3\u3092\u98df\u3079\u305f\u3002<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Yuki\u00a0<strong>wa<\/strong> chikin o tabeta.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Yuki ate chicken.<\/p>\n<p>Explanation: in this case, <strong>wa<\/strong> makes the sentence highlight on <em>chicken is the food that Yuki ate.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Who ate the chicken?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u7531\u7d00<strong>\u304c<\/strong>\u98df\u3079\u305f\u3002<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Yuki\u00a0<strong>ga<\/strong> tabeta.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Yuki (is the one who) ate it.<\/p>\n<p>Explanation: <strong>ga<\/strong> emphasized on no one else, but <em>only Yuki ate the chicken<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a brief, next time if you want to answer:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWhat did <em>subject <\/em>do?\u201d, use \u306f (wa), while<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWho is the <em>subject<\/em>?\u201d, use \u304c (ga) instead.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For your information, there are other usages of both particles.
