However, if the subject is not available in the sentence, \u2018t<em>here is<\/em><em>, there are<\/em> and <em>it is<\/em>\u2019 are used to express that something exists in English. They are also well known as a <em>dummy subject<\/em> or an <em>empty subject<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>There is vs There are<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Do you still remember the previous lesson about <a href=\"http:\/\/lingo-apps.com\/verb-to-be-english\/\">the verb to be is and are in English<\/a>? In a similar way, \u2018<em>there is\u2019<\/em> comes <u>after<\/u> a singular noun, while \u2018<em>there are\u2019<\/em> comes <u>after<\/u> a plural noun. Normally, \u2018<em>there is\u2019 <\/em>or \u2018<em>there are<\/em>\u2019 sentence when the sentence contains a <u>clear<\/u> subject. \u00a0You can use <em>there is<\/em> or <em>there are<\/em> for:<\/p>\n<h5>Introducing a new topic<\/h5>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">There is a dog.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">There are dogs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">[<em>subjects: a dog, dogs<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Expressing numbers or quantities<\/h5>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">There is a little water in the glass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">There are more than ten people coming to my house.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">[<em>subjects: a little water, more than ten people<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Note:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The single use of \u2018there\u2019 refers to an adverb of place, which is the opposite of here.<\/li>\n<li>The single use of the verb to be \u2013 is, am, are \u2013 are always used before a noun.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In informal writings and conversations, <em>there is<\/em> can be used to refer plural nouns as well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">There\u2019s five places more to visit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">There\u2019s lots of works to do.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">[<em>subjects: places, works<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can express them in past tense as well. Try <em>there was<\/em> and <em>there were<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>There was a book on the table last night.<\/p>\n<p>There were houses on this street before.<\/p>\n<p>[<em>subjects: a book, houses<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>It is<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The pronoun \u2018it\u2019 in English is always paired with the verb to be \u2018is\u2019 in a <a href=\"http:\/\/lingo-apps.com\/simple-present-tense-english\/\">present tense<\/a>. \u2018<em>It is<\/em>\u2019 tends to be followed by the adjectives rather than the nouns. In contrast with \u2018<em>there is\u2019 <\/em>and,<em> \u2018there are\u2019, \u2018it i<\/em>s\u2019 is used when the subject of the sentence is <u>not clear<\/u>. For example, you can use \u2018<em>it is<\/em>\u2019 to express natural occurrences, such as weather, time, and distance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It is snowing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It is windy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">[<em>the weather<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It is Sunday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It is 5 p.m.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">[<em>the time<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It is five kilometers away from here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It is three meters above the sky.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">[<em>the distance<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can use \u2018it is\u2019 to give opinions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It is a wonderful house.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It is a nice idea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">[<em>the opinion<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s learn English today!
