It can be either singular or plural.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What are the characteristics of nouns?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Nouns can work as the subject or the object.<\/li>\n<li>Nouns are usually preceded by <a href=\"http:\/\/lingo-apps.com\/english-articles-guide\/\">the article \u2013 a, an, the.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What are the examples of nouns?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Nouns can be anything you can think of \u2013 a boy, Jane, a cat, giraffes, peach trees, the concert, the construction, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What are the types of nouns?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are several types of nouns as the follows:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><u>Common and Proper Nouns<\/u><\/h4>\n<p>Common nouns are used to express things in general.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>e.g. <\/em>language, university, fruit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Proper things are used to express things in specific.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>e.g. <\/em>English, Harvard University, mango.<\/p>\n<p><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n<h4><u>Concrete and Abstract Nouns<\/u><\/h4>\n<p>Concrete nouns are things that you can perceive with the five senses. They can be detected by sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>e.g. <\/em>doll, chair, mirror.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Abstract nouns are things that you cannot perceive with the five senses. These refer to ideas, concepts, emotions,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>e.g. <\/em>love, success, importance.<\/p>\n<p><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n<h4><u>Countable and Uncountable Nouns<\/u><\/h4>\n<p>Countable nouns are things that can be counted using <a href=\"http:\/\/lingo-apps.com\/english-numbers-complete-guide\/\">numbers.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>e.g. <\/em>a box, three bananas, eight bowls.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Uncountable nouns are things that cannot be counted. Abstract nouns are usually uncountable as well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>e.g. <\/em>sugar, music, snow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><u>Compound and Collective Nouns<\/u><\/h4>\n<p>Compound nouns consist of two or more words. They can be one word (usually combined with no space), joined by a hyphen (-), or written as two separate words.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>e.g. <\/em>sunglasses, mother-in-law, West Europe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Collective nouns refer to a group of people, animals, or things.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>e.g. a <\/em>swarm (of bees), a herd (of elephants), a school (of fish).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><u>Forming nouns from verbs<\/u><\/h6>\n<p>We can form nouns from verbs by adding the suffix &#8211;<em>ing<\/em>. We call that gerunds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>e.g. <\/em>running (from run), swim (from swimming), eat (from eating).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, we can also form nouns by adding the suffix<em> -tion<\/em> (-<em>sion<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>e.g. <\/em>admission (from admit), description (from describe).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><u>Forming nouns from adjectives<\/u><\/h6>\n<p>We can form nouns from adjectives by adding the suffixes &#8211;<em>ness<\/em>, &#8211;<em>ity<\/em>, &#8211;<em>ment,<\/em> &#8211;<em>ance<\/em> (-<em>ence<\/em>)<em>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>e.g. <\/em>happiness (from happy), probability (from probable), enjoyment (from enjoy), and importance (from important).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s learn English today!
