What is an adjective?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Adjectives, which is one of the parts of speech, are words that used to describe nouns<\/a> or pronouns. Adjectives give information about opinion, size, shape, age, color, origin, material, or temperature of an object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Where do we put adjectives in a sentence?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In general, we put the adjective before the noun they modify.<\/p>\n

Structure: Adjective + Noun<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Examples:<\/p>\n

A great<\/strong> opinion.<\/p>\n

The brown<\/strong> chair.<\/p>\n

That Chinese<\/strong> girl.<\/p>\n

The adjective appears after the noun if there is the following verb in the sentence:<\/p>\n

to be, appear, become, feel, get, go, keep, seem, smell, sound, turn, taste<\/p>\n

Structure: Noun + Verb + Adjective<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Examples:<\/p>\n

The opinion sounds great.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The chair is brown.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That girl is Chinese.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What do we do if there are more than one adjectives in a sentence?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The correct order of adjectives in a sentence is:<\/p>\n

Opinion \u2013 Size \u2013 Temperature \u2013 Age \u2013 Shape \u2013 Color \u2013 Origin \u2013 Material<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Examples:<\/p>\n

The small young<\/strong> girl is my cousin.<\/p>\n

That beautiful antique France<\/strong> paint is painted by Leonardo da Vinci.<\/p>\n

Note: Adjectives are separated by ‘commas(,)<\/span>‘, ‘and<\/span>‘ and ‘but<\/span>‘ if adjectives modify a noun in the same way.\u00a0These are called coordinate adjectives.<\/p>\n

How is the form of the adjective? Are they regular or irregular?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

There are adjective degrees that come in irregular form. We use adjective degrees to describe the different degrees of comparison: positive adjectives, comparative adjectives, and superlative adjectives.<\/a><\/p>\n

Positive adjectives: tall, young, beautiful.<\/p>\n

Comparative adjectives: taller, younger, more beautiful.<\/p>\n

Superlative adjectives: the tallest, the youngest, the most beautiful.<\/p>\n

Mary is young.<\/p>\n

Mary is younger than James.<\/p>\n

Mary is the youngest in the family.<\/p>\n

How to emphasize the meaning of an adjective?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

We use the adverbs \u2018very\u2019<\/em> or \u2018really\u2019<\/em> before the adjective to emphasize an adjective.<\/p>\n

James is very<\/em> tall.<\/p>\n

Chinese is a really<\/em> important language.<\/p>\n
