There are many untranslatable words in each languages. However, do you know that even translatable words may not have exactly the same meaning in other languages?<\/p>\n<p>For example, <em>\u201cwater\u201d<\/em> in English is generally translated as <em>\u201c\u6c34(mizu)\u201d<\/em> in Japanese, but <em>\u201cwater\u201d<\/em> and <em>\u201cmizu\u201d<\/em> don\u2019t have exactly the same meaning.<\/p>\n<p>Depends on the language, range of the word meaning or classification of the word are different.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s see 4 examples!<\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Water<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/lingo-apps.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/word-water.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3653\" src=\"http:\/\/lingo-apps.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/word-water-1024x768.png\" alt=\"water-hot-water\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lingo-apps.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/word-water-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/lingo-apps.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/word-water-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/lingo-apps.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/word-water-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/lingo-apps.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/word-water-600x450.png 600w, https:\/\/lingo-apps.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/word-water-213x160.png 213w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cwater\u201d<\/em> in English and in French is defined as a liquid without color, smell or taste. There is no definition by the temperature.<\/p>\n<p>There are cold water, warm water, hot water, and boiled water, but as long as they are liquid, all of them are regarded as water in different temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>However, Japanese word, <em>\u6c34(mizu)<\/em> which is generally translated as water, always need to be cold or room temperature. When water is hot, they use totally different word, <em>\u304a\u6e6f(oyu)<\/em> which means hot water. <em>\u71b1\u3044(atsui)<\/em> means hot in Japanese, but they never say <em>\u71b1\u3044\u6c34(atsui mizu)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t know the temperature of the water, you cannot translated it to Japanese correctly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>2. However, they are not distinguished in French.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There is a word, <em>papillon de nuit<\/em>, means night butterfly in French, but this word is used only when they emphasise it.<\/p>\n<p>Normally French people think that the moth is one type of butterfly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>3. But armchair is regarded as one type of chair which has arms.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Japanese word, <em>\u3072\u3058\u304b\u3051\u3044\u3059\/\u8098\u639b\u3051\u6905\u5b50(hijikake isu),<\/em> is made by two elements, <em>\u201cput the elbow + chair\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, armchair in French is <em>\u201cfauteuil\u201d<\/em> which is totally different word from chair, <em>\u201cchaise\u201d<\/em>. it happens not only in French, but also in many languages.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>4. It\u2019s distinguished from shoe.<\/p>\n<p>However, boot in Japanese is translated as <em>\u9577\u9774(nagagutsu)<\/em>, which means <em>\u201clong shoe\u201d<\/em> and boot is regarded as one type of shoe in Japanese.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, footwear in English includes socks but, <em>\u306f\u304d\u3082\u306e\/\u5c65\u7269(hakimono)<\/em> , means footwear in general, doesn\u2019t include socks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Normally, we don\u2019t notice this fact even if you speak foreign language fluently.
