In this lesson, we will discuss how to use Chinese adjectives in the basic sentence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In English, we use \u2018<em>to be<\/em>\u2019 to fill in the gap between \u2018nouns\u2019 and \u2018adjectives\u2019. Let\u2019s say:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">She <em>is<\/em> beautiful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(noun + <em>to be<\/em> + adjective)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The same rule does not apply in Chinese. We do not use <a href=\"http:\/\/lingo-apps.com\/basic-chinese-grammars-beginner\/\">\u662f (sh\u00ec)<\/a> \u2013 which may be translated as \u2018to be\u2019 \u2013 to link \u2018nouns\u2019 and \u2018adjectives\u2019. Instead, we use <strong>degree adverbs<\/strong>, which describe the degree of the adjectives:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u5f88 (h\u011bn) \u2013 very<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u597d (h\u01ceo) \u2013 highly<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u771f (zh\u0113n) \u2013 really<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u975e\u5e38 (f\u0113ich\u00e1ng) \u2013 extremely<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u4e0d (b\u00f9) \u2013 not<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Structure: Noun + Degree Adverb + Adjective<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u4ed6\u5f88\u5e25\u3002<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u4ed6\u5f88\u5e05\u3002<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">t\u0101 h\u011bn shu\u00e0i.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">He is (very) handsome.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a linking verb, \u5f88 is generally not translated as \u2018very\u2019.
