The verb to come<\/em><\/strong> and to go<\/em><\/strong> in Japanese is not as simple as English does. The dictionary defines them as \u6765\u308b<\/strong> (kuru)<\/strong> and \u884c\u304f<\/strong> (iku)<\/strong> respectively. So, how do they differ from each other?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u884c\u304f (iku)<\/td>\n\u884c\u304d\u307e\u3059 (ikimasu)<\/td>\n\u884c\u304d\u307e\u3057\u305f (ikimashita)<\/td>\nto go<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Well, the key is the difference in point of view<\/strong>. In another word, it means that we need to consider the direction of the action <\/strong>before choosing \u6765\u308b (kuru) or \u884c\u304f (iku).<\/p>\n

In fact, both \u6765\u308b (kuru) and \u884c\u304f (iku) refer to the same thing \u2013 the movement of someone\/something from location A to location B.<\/p>\n

Use \u6765\u308b (kuru) when the object moves toward the speaker.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, \u884c\u304fis used when the object moves away from the speaker.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s analyze which one is suitable situation case by case!<\/p>\n

Scene 1<\/strong><\/h2>\n

You are talking with your brother at your house. If you want to ask your brother whether Mr. Tanaka is coming to your house tomorrow, you will say:<\/p>\n

\u660e\u65e5\u7530\u4e2d\u3055\u3093\u306f\u6765\u307e\u3059\u304b?<\/p>\n

Ashita Tanaka-san wa kimasu ka?<\/p>\n

Will Mr. Tanaka come Tomorrow?<\/p>\n

From this sentence, notice that there is a movement of Mr. Tanaka from somewhere towards the speaker<\/em> (you, as the speaker). Therefore, you should use \u6765\u307e\u3059 (kimasu) instead of \u884c\u304d\u307e\u3059 (ikimasu).<\/p>\n

Scene 2<\/strong><\/h2>\n

You are talking with your friend at your school. Supposed that you are asking whether your friend went to the library yesterday. You will ask:<\/p>\n

\u6628\u65e5\u56f3\u66f8\u9928\u306b\u884c\u304d\u307e\u3057\u305f\u304b?<\/p>\n

Kin\u014d toshokan ni ikimashita ka?<\/p>\n

Did you go to the library yesterday?<\/p>\n

Conversely, the above sentence implies that there is a movement of your friend from where the speaker located (school) to somewhere (library). Thus, choose \u884c\u304d\u307e\u3059 (ikimasu) in this case.<\/p>\n

In short, \u6765\u307e\u3059 (kimasu) indicates to here, while \u884c\u304d\u307e\u3059 (ikimasu) indicates from here.<\/p>\n
