How to Express Superlative in Japanese<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Just like comparative degree, there is no superlative degree form in Japanese. \u2018The most\u2019 for comparing\u00a0three or more objects<\/u> is commonly stated by \u4e00\u756a (ichiban) or \u6700\u3082 (mottomo). Read: Comparative Degree – How to Compare Two Objects in Japanese.\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0Let\u2019s learn how to express superlatives in Japanese!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u4e00\u756a<\/strong> (ichiban)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u4e00\u756a (ichiban) is literally translated as \u2018number one\u2019. It is used colloquially.<\/p>\n

Structure: \u4e00\u756a + Adjective<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Example:<\/p>\n

\u51ac\u304c\u4e00\u756a\u597d\u304d<\/strong>\u3067\u3059\u3002<\/p>\n

Fuyu ga ichiban<\/strong> suki<\/strong> desu.<\/p>\n

I like winter the most.<\/p>\n

Note: it might sound odd, but \u597d\u304d (suki) \u2018like\u2019 is actually na-adjective in Japanese.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If you want to show \u2018within a scope\u2019, use the following structure.<\/p>\n

Country\/region + \u3067 + \u4e00\u756a + Adjective<\/p>\n

\u306e\u4e2d\u3067 + \u4e00\u756a + Adjective<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Thus:<\/p>\n

\u6771\u4eac\u30b9\u30ab\u30a4\u30c4\u30ea\u30fc\u306f\u65e5\u672c\u3067\u4e00\u756a\u9ad8\u3044<\/strong>\u5efa\u7269\u3067\u3059\u3002<\/p>\n

T\u014dky\u014d sukaitsur\u012b wa Nihon de ichiban takai<\/strong> tatemono desu.<\/p>\n

Tokyo Sky Tree is the tallest building in Japan.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u6700<\/strong>\u3082<\/strong> (mottomo)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

On the other hand, \u6700\u3082 (mottomo), which means \u2018the most\u2019, sounds more formal.<\/p>\n

\u6700\u3082 + Adjective<\/p>\n

\u306e\u4e2d\u3067 + \u6700\u3082 + Adjective<\/p>\n

\u672c\u5dde\u306f\u65e5\u672c\u3067\u6700\u3082\u5927\u304d\u3044<\/strong>\u5cf6\u3067\u3059\u3002<\/p>\n

Honshu is the largest island in Japan.<\/p>\n

\u7b2c\u4e00\u6b69\u304c\u5e38\u306b\u6700\u3082\u96e3\u3057\u3044\u3067\u3059<\/strong>\u3002<\/p>\n

Daiippo ga tsuneni mottomo muzukash\u012b desu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Superlative Questions<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For superlative questions, we cannot use \u3069\u3061\u3089 (dochira) \u2013 it is used for two objects questions only. Instead, we use the question words, depending on the type of the objects.<\/p>\n

\u8ab0 (dare) \u2013 people<\/p>\n

\u3069\u3053 (doko) \u2013 place<\/p>\n

\u3044\u3064 (itsu) – time<\/p>\n

\u4f55\u304b (nani) \u2013 other kinds<\/p>\n

\u3069\u308c (dore) \u2013 lists of items<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Examples:<\/p>\n

\u30af\u30e9\u30b9\u306e\u4e2d\u3067\u3001\u8ab0<\/strong>\u304c\u4e00\u756a\u53ef\u611b\u3044\u3067\u3059\u304b\uff1f<\/p>\n

Who is the cutest in class?<\/p>\n

\u4e57\u308a\u7269\u306e\u4e2d\u3067\u3001\u4f55<\/strong>\u304c\u4e00\u756a\u901f\u3044\u3067\u3059\u304b\uff1f<\/p>\n
