Adverbs in Japanese<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Adverbs in Japanese works like English do \u2013 they modify verbs, adjectives, and even other adverbs.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Forming Adverbs from Adjectives<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In English, we formed adverbs by attaching the suffix -ly<\/em> to the adjectives. Similarly, the Japanese also do the same modification as well.<\/p>\n

–<\/strong>\u3044<\/strong> (-i) Adjectives<\/strong><\/h4>\n

For –<\/strong>\u3044<\/strong> (-i) adjectives<\/strong>, all you need to do is as simple as substituting the -\u3044 (-i) with -\u304f (-ku).<\/p>\n

\u65e9\u3044 \u2192 \u65e9\u304f<\/p>\n

hayai \u2192 hayaku<\/p>\n

fast (adjective) \u2192 fast (adverb)<\/p>\n

\u6642\u9593\u304c\u65e9\u304f\u904e\u304e\u308b\u3002<\/p>\n

Jikan ga hayaku sugiru.<\/p>\n

Time passes quickly.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

–<\/strong>\u306a<\/strong> (-na) Adjectives<\/strong><\/h4>\n

For –<\/strong>\u306a<\/strong> (-na) adjectives<\/strong>, simply attach -\u306b (-ni) at the end of the adjectives.<\/p>\n

\u9759\u304b \u2192 \u9759\u304b\u306b<\/p>\n

shizuka \u2192 shizuka ni<\/p>\n

quiet \u2192 quietly<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u5f7c\u306f\u9759\u304b\u306b<\/strong>\u6b69\u304d\u307e\u3057\u305f\u3002<\/p>\n

Kare wa shizuka ni<\/strong> arukimashita.<\/p>\n

He walked q<\/strong>uietly.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Exceptions:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u3044\u3044 \u2192 \u3088\u304f<\/p>\n

\u012a \u2192 yoku<\/p>\n

good \u2192 well<\/p>\n

[\u3088\u304f (yoku) can also mean often – adverb of frequency]<\/p>\n

kakko\u012b \u2192 kakkoyoku<\/p>\n

cool \u2192 coolly<\/p>\n

In fact, not all adverbs are derived from adjectives. These true adverbs are regularly used in sentences, so you should pay more attention to them.<\/p>\n
