Lesson 4. The Complete Guide about Pronouns in English

Pronouns in English

Pronouns are used to replace nouns or noun phrases in a sentence. They are used to refer a person, a thing, a group of people, or a group of things. There are different types of pronouns: subject pronouns, object pronouns, possessive adjectives, possessive pronouns, reflexive pronouns. Let’s take a look of pronouns in English here!

Subject Pronouns

Subject pronouns are used to replace the subject of the sentence. They can be used to avoid the subject’s name repetition. They are generally found at the beginning of the sentence.

1st person, singular I
2nd person, singular You
3rd person, singular, male He
3rd person, singular, female She
3rd person, singular, neutral It
1st person, plural We
2nd person, plural You
3rd person, plural They

Examples:

I am happy.

He did not come to the party last night.

We are 22 years old.

Object Pronouns

Object pronouns are used to show the direct or indirect object of a verb in the sentence.

1st person, singular Me
2nd person, singular You
3rd person, singular, male Him
3rd person, singular, female Her
3rd person, singular, neutral It
1st person, plural Us
2nd person, plural You
3rd person, plural Them

Examples:

Don’t tell me that you are angry.

We found him on the second floor.

You can take all of them.

Possessive Adjectives

Just like adjectives, possessive adjectives are adjectives, which modify nouns. They appear before nouns to indicate a possession of something.

1st person, singular My
2nd person, singular Your
3rd person, singular, male His
3rd person, singular, female Her
3rd person, singular, neutral Its
1st person, plural Our
2nd person, plural Your
3rd person, plural Their

Examples:

These are my belongings.

It is our responsibility to protect the environment.

Could you please tell me what your name is?

Possessive Pronouns

Possessive pronouns are also used to indicate possession. They can stand alone without followed by any other noun.

1st person, singular Mine
2nd person, singular Yours
3rd person, singular, male His
3rd person, singular, female Hers
3rd person, singular, neutral
1st person, plural Ours
2nd person, plural Yours
3rd person, plural Theirs

Examples:

This book is not mine.

Is she a friend of yours?

I don’t think these are ours.

Reflexive Pronouns

Reflexive pronouns refer to the subject. They are used when the subject and the object of the sentence are the same nouns.

1st person, singular Myself
2nd person, singular Yourself
3rd person, singular, male Himself
3rd person, singular, female Herself
3rd person, singular, neutral Itself
1st person, plural Ourselves
2nd person, plural Yourselves
3rd person, plural Themselves

Examples:
